Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology Queensland TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST Heatwave Warning Issued at 02:13 PM EST on Tuesday 17 December 2024 Valid for Tuesday 17 December 2024 to Friday 20 December 2024 Warning for the following areas: North West Warning for the following areas: Gulf Country, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, North Tropical Coast and Tablelands, Herbert and Lower Burdekin, Central West and Channel Country Safety Advice:: Extreme heatwaves can be dangerous for everyone. Severe heatwaves can be dangerous for many people, especially older people, babies, children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, people with medical conditions and people who are unwell. Seek a place to keep cool, such as your home, a library, community centre or shopping centre. Close your windows and draw blinds, curtains or awnings early in the day to keep the heat out of your home. If available, use fans or air-conditioners to keep cool. Maximum temperatures ranging from the low to high thirties with overnight minimum temperatures in the low to mid twenties over the North Tropical Coast and Tablelands and Herbert and Lower Burdekin districts. Maximum temperatures ranging from the high thirties to the mid forties with overnight minimum temperatures in the mid twenties to low thirties over the Gulf Country, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, North West, Central West and Channel Country districts. Extreme heatwave conditions are expected to ease over the North West district from mid week. Extreme heatwave conditions have eased over the North Tropical Coast and Tablelands district, although severe heatwave conditions are expected to persist over the next few days. Severe heatwave conditions are expected to ease over the west by the end of the week, but may persist over parts of Cape York Peninsula and the north into the weekend. Locations likely to be impacted include Birdsville, Cloncurry, Camooweal, Ingham, Julia Creek, Mount Isa, Port Douglas, Thargomindah, Winton and Windorah. The next heatwave warning will be issued by 3:00pm EST on Wednesday 18 December 2024
