Severe Weather Warning

Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology New South Wales Coastal Hazard Warning for DAMAGING SURF for parts of Hunter, Metropolitan, Illawarra and Mid North Coast Forecast Districts. Issued at 10:41 pm Friday, 17 January 2025. Damaging Surf conditions continuing tonight about exposed parts of the coast. Weather Situation A low pressure system off of the northern NSW coast is producing strong south to southeasterly winds which will continue to drive large, powerful southerly waves for the remainder of tonight and early Saturday morning. DAMAGING SURF for the following areas: Mid North Coast, Hunter, Metropolitan and Illawarra VERY HEAVY SURF which may lead to localised damage and coastal erosion is likely about exposed coasts between Ulladulla and Seal Rocks during the remainder of tonight and early Saturday morning before steadily abating, however hazardous surf conditions are likely to continue across much of the coast during the remainder of Saturday. Beach conditions in these areas could be dangerous and people should stay well away from the surf and surf exposed areas. Locations which may be affected include Port Kembla, Wollongong, Sydney, Terrigal, Norah Head, and Newcastle. A separate Hazardous Surf Warning is also current. A Severe Weather Warning for Damaging Winds and Heavy Rainfall is also current. Flood Watches and Warnings are also current. For all of the latest warnings, please refer to http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/warnings/. A wave height of up to 4.9 m was recorded at Sydney and 5.4 m at Crowdy Head this morning. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires. * For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500. The next Coastal Hazard Warning will be issued by 5:00 am AEDT Saturday. Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.
