Widespread Lightning for NSW
Joel Pippard

Over 600,000 lightning strikes were recorded yesterday as storms sparked up across NSW.
Severe storms stretched along the ranges from Jindabyne all the way to Armidale, including Sydney and Canberra. Another line of storms also moved across the entire Central and North West Slopes and Plains district.
These storms brought heavy rain and damaging winds across the state. Near Braidwood, Mountview recorded 47mm in 30 minutes to 4:25pm while Mongarlowe recorded 84.6mm in total.
Coonamble and Scone both recorded a maximum wind gust of 72.2km/h. Tamworth recorded a gust of 64.8km/h while Penrith recorded gusts of 55.6km/h.
623,000 lightning strikes were recorded across the state. Aptly named Lightning Ridge recorded 100,000 strikes within 100km while Parkes saw 65,000 strikes within 100km.
These storms were generated by two troughs deepening throughout the day, fed by the low pressure system bringing heavy rain to central Australia.
Today, storms may spark up again, particularly in the northeast of the state. To stay up to date with the latest warnings visit http://www.weatherzone.com.au/warnings.jsp
