'We won't be getting out of here for days'

Anthony Sharwood

The dangerous weather situation in Queensland continues, as extremely heavy rain continues to fall and roads are cut off across the southeast of the state.

Earlier today we wrote about a deluge of over 300 mm in three hours early this morning in Queensland's Wide Bay and Burnett district, as a deep layer of moisture-laden air interacted with a broad upper-level low pressure system and a trough of low pressure near the surface.

You can see that moisture clearly in the animation below, and that same band has since delivered exceptionally heavy rainfall to areas further south this afternoon, from Toowoomba and the Darling Downs to the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and Gold Coast.

Sunshine Coast resident Melanie Morgan told Weatherzone that low-lying areas around her home in Peregian Springs, near Coolum, had been inundated, as over 100 mm of rain fell in four hours.

"About an hour ago I looked out and could not see any grass at all on the golf course. The rain hasn't stopped for about 12 hours.

"I’m supposed to be camping with my horse this weekend, but the place where I would be camping is three metres underwater."

Morgan said the person who owns the property at Kilkivan (inland from Gympie) where she had planned to go camping was now isolated.

"I spoke to her and she said 'We won't be getting out of here for a few days. Lucky I just went shopping!'"

In Toowoomba, local resident Charlotte Greer said she'd had 240mm of rain at her place in the past 24hrs and shared this remarkable video of gushing floodwater in the Toowoomba CBD.

"I couldn't get into work today, the roads were flooded, water was lying everywhere. The water was raging at Dent St as per the video."

As we write this story late on Friday afternoon, many locations in SE Qld have now received over 150 mm since 9 am this morning alone. The rain in some spots comes on the back of exceptionally heavy falls in recent days that included the readings in the graphic below:

Please stay glued to our site over the weekend as the heavy rain is not expected to ease in SE Queensland, and remember also to keep up to date with our warnings page, as the danger will likely increase as rain continues.
