Unseasonably wet and cold in the Kimberley
Towards the end of the working week, unseasonable rain started tumbling down over Western Australia's Kimberley region, which we told you about in this story on Friday. Since then, further rain has fallen over the region.
The towns of Derby and Curtin both finished September with record breaking daily rainfall totals for the month and have started October off in similar fashion. Derby recorded 55.6mm of rain in the 24 hours to 9am Sunday, the highest daily total for the month of October in the 62 years of records. Curtin hit triple digits, with 103.2mm reaching the gauge in the same period, this is the highest in 27 years.
Elsewhere around the district, 55.6mm fell at Derby and 43.6mm at Troughton Island. This was the highest single day October rainfall total in 62 years and 36 years respectively.
The cut-off low responsible for this unseasonable rain also brought extensive cloud cover with it, keeping a lid on daytime temperatures. Below are some of the more impressive statistics from Saturday:
- Curtin reached 30.6 degrees. The coldest October day in the 32 years of records and 8.5 below the monthly average
- Fitzroy Crossing reached just 27.6 degrees. The coldest October day in the 25 years of records and a whopping 12.7 below the monthly average
- Kalumburu (27.9 degrees) & Truscott (28.2 degrees) had their coldest October day in at least 24 and 17 years respectively

For a lot of towns in the Kimberley region these daytime temperatures are more like what they would experience in the middle of winter, even colder in some locations. In Fitzroy Crossing for example, June is the coldest month with an average maximum temperature of 30.6 degrees. The top temperature recorded on Saturday was a full three degrees below this.
Sunday will bring similar conditions. Rainfall totals of 15-30mm are expected throughout most of the Kimberley with isolated higher totals likely. Cloud will once again be a factor, bringing another unseasonably cool day.
