Tropical cyclone names released ahead of 2022-23 season

Ben Domensino

The list of names to be used for Australia’s upcoming tropical cyclone season is out and if your name is Darian, you’re first in line to have an Aussie cyclone named after you this season.

The Australian tropical cyclone season runs from November until April. During this time, we typically see around 9 to 11 tropical cyclones forming in the Australia region, with about four of these typically making landfall.

Every tropical cyclone that forms in Australia’s area of responsibility is given a name. This is done to help with communications about the system, which becomes especially useful when there are multiple low pressure systems and tropical cyclones over an ocean at the same time.

The names used for Australia’s tropical cyclones come from a pre-determined list that is selected and maintained by the Bureau of Meteorology. The list runs alphabetically and alternates between male and female names.

This season’s first name will be Darian, followed by Ellie and then Freddy. The graphic below shows the next 10 names that will be assigned to tropical cyclones that develop inside Australia’s area of responsibility.

La Niña typically increases the number of tropical cyclones in the Australian region, meaning we could see a near to slightly above average number of cyclones over the next six months.
