Heavy rain is finally clearing the NSW coastline, but not before the almost week-long deluge delivered one last record soaking for parts of the NSW Mid North Coast.

The large regional town of Taree (population approx. 26,000) saw 305 mm in the 24 hours to Thursday morning, its heaviest daily rainfall on record, with records dating back to 1881.

It came on the back of 60mm of rain to Wednesday morning, plus lighter falls last weekend and earlier this week.

As you'd expect, Taree's Manning River is one of numerous rivers on that part of the NSW coastline with flood warnings in place. The current local situation according to the BoM's warning issued just before 9 am Thursday is:

• The Manning River at Wingham (just upstream of Taree) is currently at 9.21 metres and rising with moderate flooding. It is likely to peak near 9.40 metres Thursday afternoon with moderate flooding.
• The Manning River at Taree is currently at 2.79 metres and rising with moderate flooding. The Manning River at Taree is likely to peak near 3.10 metres Thursday afternoon with moderate flooding.

You might recall that the Manning River near Taree was the scene of one of the most memorable images of the March 2021 floods, when an entire home (believed to have been a Wingham residence) was filmed floating down the river.

For the record, Taree saw 660 mm in March 2021, and while no such dramatic scenes have been replicated today, there remains a potentially dangerous situation in the area this morning, and we urge you to check all the latest warnings on our warnings page.

Meanwhile, as stated at the start of this story, the heaviest showers appear to have dissipated in New South Wales now, with some heavy stuff still offshore but nothing beyond a few light showers along the coast.
