Sydney's hottest May day in 70 years

Ben Domensino
Sydneysiders have enjoyed the hottest May day in 70 years. The city soared to 29.1 degrees this afternoon. This was the highest temperature recorded during May since 1942 and the fourth highest on record for the month. Today's beach-worthy temperature was not far off the all time May record. Sydney managed to reach 30 degrees almost a century ago, on May 1st, 1919. Much of New South Wales is enjoying warm weather today thanks to a large high pressure system sitting over the state's east. Winds under this high were almost calm at 1:30pm today when the daytime maxima was recorded, which allowed heat to build at the surface. This saw the mercury jump by almost 2 degrees in 30 minutes. Sydney is now on track to record its warmest string of days during May for five years, as long as the city reaches its forecast top of 26 degrees tomorrow.
