Soggy weekend in Sydney

Andrew Casper-Richardson

The warm and dry month of March may seem like a distant memory for some Sydneysiders, as heavy showers tumbled down on Saturday and will continue into the working week.

The official weather station for Sydney (Observatory Hill) recorded 89mm of rain in the 24 hours to 9am on Sunday. This makes it the wettest day for the city in close to six months. The rain was exceptionally heavy at times in the small hours of Sunday morning, with 16.4mm falling in just 10 minutes. Falls were lighter elsewhere in the Sydney Basin with 72mm falling in Abbotsford, 40mm at Olympic Park and 34mm at Randwick. Falls were lighter again in the far western suburbs with Richmond and Penrith picking up 2mm and 1mm respectively.

These heavy falls were triggered by a nearby low-pressure trough, being fed ample moisture by a deep south-easterly flow.

Showers kept falling throughout Sunday morning with highest falls over the northern parts of the city. In the four hours to 1pm, 41mm had fallen at Chatswood, and Terrey Hills and Avalon had both recorded 40mm. Showers will continue for the Harbour City on Sunday afternoon, becoming less likely during the evening.

Monday will see showers once again, with the heaviest falls occurring during the afternoon and evening and along the eastern suburbs. Showers are expected to get heavier on Tuesday and there may be the odd storm as well. Once again falls should be heavier over the east. Showers become less of a chance later in the week and will be all clear by Saturday.
