Snowy sunrise over Hobart

Anthony Sharwood

The first snow of autumn 2023 has fallen in Tasmania, and the clouds very politely decided to clear after dawn, allowing residents to take some great pics of kunanyi/Mt Wellington, which rises to 1271 metres above the city.

As we told you yesterday, snow was expected to fall as low as 700 metres above sea level in Tasmania overnight as a cold front surged through our southernmost state.

While the snow appears to have settled only to about the 1000-metre level on Wednesday morning, it's likely that flakes fell to lower levels in the small hours of the night.

The date-stamped image above of kunanyi/Mt Wellington taken early this morning shows accumulation of a few centimetres near the summit, where the temperature was still -0.2°C at 9 am, after an overnight low of -2.5°C.

Up at the tiny ski field of Mt Mawson just under two hours northwest of Hobart, the snow was a little heavier, as you can see on this morning's date-stamped image.

The city of Hobart was just 9.8°C at 9 am, after a morning low of 6.5°C, and the mercury should struggle its way up to 16°C later today, with a shower or two sticking around after 10.4 mm of rain overnight.

Cold overnight temps were also recorded in the high country of NSW and Victoria, and frosts can be expected tonight into Thursday morning, as a spell of coolish but mostly fine early autumn weather sets in over the southeastern corner of the country.
