Record June warmth in Darwin

Ben Domensino

Darwin Airport registered its first ever 35-degree June day at the beginning of this week.

The weather station at Darwin Airport has been collecting temperature observations since 1941. Prior to this week, the temperature at the airport had never exceeded 34.6 degrees during its 80 years of recording data.

However, this changed on Monday. The mercury rose to 35.0 degrees at the airport during Monday afternoon, beating the previous June record from 2016 by nearly half a degree.

Earlier this year, Darwin Airport also set a new high minimum temperature record for February, when the mercury only dipped to an overnight low of 29.7 degrees.

Daytime maximum temperatures are forecast to reach 32-33 degrees from Wednesday through to the weekend. This is closer to normal for this time of year, but still a few degrees above the long-term average.
