Rain along North Coast Queensland finally easing

Andrew Schmidt

North Coast QLD has been hit with heavy rainfall over the past several days. This was due to a wide trough and cloud band drawing moisture into the region from the Coral Sea.

Here's a look at some 24hr rainfall totals to 9am Friday 18th:

  • Cairns: 104.8mm
  • South Johnstone: 134.8mm
  • Port Douglas: 61.2mm
  • Cowley Beach: 88.2mm
  • Innisfail Aero: 132.0mm

While the rain has been easing, it hasn't completely given up. Cooktown has already received 35mm since 9am today, and should receive more throughout the day. These heavy falls won't be widespread, and will become more restricted to the coast before moving offshore in the coming days.

A high pressure system will be the next resident moving into the region, bringing much calmer conditions to the north coast after Sunday 20th, although far-north QLD will still be in the firing line for showers.
