An early morning thunderstorm has delivered Perth's heaviest daily rainfall on record for the month of November.

Rain and thunder rolled over Perth from the north under the cover of darkness on Tuesday morning. The storms were triggered by a low pressure trough that was being fed by abundant moisture from the tropics.

Between 4am and 6am, the city collected 40mm of rain. By 9am, the city's official daily total (for the 24 hours to 9am Tuesday) had reached 40.4mm.

This two-hour deluge is close to two months' worth of rain for this time of year. The daily total of 40.4mm is also Perth's highest daily rainfall on record during November, beating 39.1 mm from 1956, with data extending back to 1880.

Drier weather will return to Perth for the rest of this week as a high pressure system moves over WA.
