Perth's hottest start to November on record

Brett Dutschke
After hitting 37.0 degrees today, Perth has averaged a maximum of 34 so far this month, making it the hottest start to November on record. It has also exceeded 30 degrees on each of the first three days of November, only the second time in more than 110 years of records. The only other occurrence was in 1999, but in the first three days of that November, the average maximum was only 31 degrees. Today's 37 degrees is not the hottest it's been this early in the month. On this day in 1997 it got to 37.5. On the 1st of November 1985 it reached 37.9 and on the 1st of November 1936 it was a scorching 39.4 degrees. The current hot spell is about to end as hot northeasterly winds get traded for cooler southwesterlies. Thursday will be about 10 degrees cooler than today, Friday may be as much as 15 degrees cooler than today. This cooler change will bring a few showers to the Perth area but not enough to register in the gauges in some suburbs. Storms are a chance south of about Perth on Thursday, possibly bringing damaging winds. It will only gradually warm up this weekend, barely reaching the mid 20s, but further heating next week may mean more 30-degree days.
