Perth to be hit by cold front
Western Australia has been on the receiving end of Australia's heat for some time now. Perth has had a record 12 days of 40 degree heat this summer, with another expected today. But relief is on the way as a cold front approaches the region.
After today's sweltering top of 41oC this cold front will arrive in the early morning, meaning Sunday is only expected to reach 27oC. That's a big 14oC difference! Even with such a large drop in temperatures, it will still become cooler. Monday 7th will see maximum temperatures as low as 23oC.
Forecast 850hPa air temperature on Sunday 2300EDT, according to the ECMWF model.
Winds will certainly be on the agenda when the front arrives. Wind gusts of 70km/h can easily be expected on the Perth Coast, and even stronger winds are predicted for the south coast. Such strong winds will lead to large waves. Coasts surrounding Perth could see significant wave heights of over 3m on Monday 7th, so you may have to miss the beaches that day.
After the cold front passes and makes its way east, Perth will see temperatures closer to average, and away from 40oC days for at least a week. It won't be long until temperatures begin to rise again, so enjoy this brief respite while it's possible.
