Massive line of thunderstorms marching across WA
An intense line of severe thunderstorms is marching across southwestern WA on Wednesday morning, bringing a wild mix of heavy rainfall and destructive winds.
The massive line of thunderstorms has developed between Geraldton and Albany stretching 800 km across southern WA.
The storms are forming along a strong cold front that is interacting with a warm, humid and unstable atmosphere.

This huge line of storms is part of a large weather system that also produced rain and thunderstorms in parts of southwestern WA on Tuesday afternoon and overnight.
Busselton in the state’s far southwest saw its wettest September day in more than 146 years of records, with the town recording 91.4mm in the 24 hours leading up to 9am on Wednesday, September 13.
There have also been some impressive short-duration rainfall totals in the region this morning, including 37mm in one hour at Vasse at around 6am, and 36.2mm in 3 hours at Busselton Airport just before 9am local time.
Severe thunderstorm warnings were also issued for Greater Perth on Wednesday morning.
Severe weather warnings have been issued this morning warning of more heavy rainfall, damaging and locally destructive winds.
The severe thunderstorms are likely to produce short bursts of heavy rainfall across the state’s southwest, particularly along the southwest and lower west coasts.
A wind gust of 126km/h was recorded at Rottnest Island at around 8:30am on Wednesday morning. The wind associated with these storms and cold front are a rare occurrence, with winds of this strength typically only seen twice a year.
The fierce thunderstorms can produce destructive winds across the southern coastal districts, which may cause damage to homes and property. The destructive gusts could exceed 125km/h in the region, including Perth.
The map below shows the strongest wind will move further inland during the afternoon and evening, possibly impacting the regional towns of Kalgoorlie, Hopetoun and Cue.

Looking ahead intense winds will continue across southern WA overnight and into Thursday morning as the cold front sweeps the across the state before easing late in the day.
