It only rained twice during September this year in Kalgoorlie. And although the heavy rainfall that occurred after 9am on the last day of the month on Monday technically counts as rainfall towards October's statistics, it was the heaviest rainfall in nearly two years for the city. A deep low pressure system and associated trough slowly swept over the western interior of the country on Sunday 30th, leading to widespread thunderstorms and heavy showers over parts of WA. Various locations received their heaviest rain in months, which included the heaviest in eight months for Norseman (14mm) and six months for Giles (a meager 1mm). Officially, only 2.8mm fell over Kalgoorlie during September 2018, most of it before 9am on Sunday 30th. However, later in the afternoon, a massive downpour of 24mm occurred in just over three hours, more than half of which fell during a very soggy 10 minutes. With rainfall statistics always reported over the 24 hours from 9am, this technically counts as October rainfall. Impressively, this was the heaviest 24-hour October rainfall in 32 years for Kalgoorlie.
