High winds, dangerous seas and heavy rain batter WA

Mellissa Mackellar
Southwestern parts of WA are copping destructive winds, with bursts of heavy rain and dangerous surf. A severe weather warning is in place for areas southwest of a line from Jurien Bay to Israelite Bay due to the potential for widespread damaging winds with locally destructive gusts and abnormally high tides. This includes cities such as Perth, Mandurah, Busselton, Albany, and Esperance. The worst wind conditions are likely near the coast between Bunbury and Augusta where gusts in excess of 125km/h will be felt this afternoon. Damaging winds up to 110km/h are possible for the entire warning area, which could result in further damage. The wild conditions are the result of a deepening low pressure system just off the southwestern coast of WA. The low is triggering showers in Perth while the state's southwest is copping the heaviest falls. In Perth wind speeds have reached 70km/h with reports of damage due to fallen trees, while wind gusts at Cape Naturaliste up to 139km/h mark their strongest winds in at least 10 years. Margaret River had received 29mm between 9am and 2pm with as much as 9mm falling in a space of 10 minutes. Rain rates greater than 5mm in 10 minutes can result in flash flooding. Heavy rain in conjunction with higher than normal tides could result in flooding of low-lying coastal areas between Lancelin to Cape Leeuwin, particularly in Geographe Bay. Dangerous surf conditions may also cause significant beach erosion. As the low slowly tracks east, the South and Southeast Coastal districts will receive the strongest winds this evening while conditions in Perth ease slightly. Tomorrow, as the low tracks further to the southeast, westerly winds will remain fresh and gusty although weaker than today. A cooler airmass will move into the southwest region bringing day time temperatures down a couple of degrees with scattered showers persisting. Another low pressure system is due to arrive later on Tuesday bringing a return of strong winds and rain to the southwest.
