Parts of Sydney's Northern Beaches were hit with heavy showers on Saturday night and early Sunday morning, whilst lower totals were recorded throughout the Sydney basin.

Light showers kicked off for the Harbour City during the afternoon but increased significantly over parts of the city during the evening, as a low-pressure trough moved along the New South Wales coast.

Terry Hills, located on the Northern Beaches, had the highest total in Sydney, recording 75.8mm in the 24 hours to 9am Sunday. This was the suburbs highest daily August total in 16 years, and the highest daily total in nearly six months. Not only was the total rainfall impressive, but the rate in which it fell was also notable, with 7mm being recorded in just 10 minutes. Established in 2004, the weather station has been collecting rainfall data since 2005, averaging 55.2mm for the full month of August since then. The persistent heavy showers delivered over a months' worth of rain in the three hours just after midnight.

Other notable totals through the Northern beaches include 60mm at Avalon, 54mm at Allambie and 46mm at Mona Vale. There were even a few lighting strikes observed and/or recorded over the northern parts of the beaches.

Totals elsewhere were generally much lower and in the 2-4mm range with the odd higher amount sprinkled in, such as 20mm at Peakhurst and 15mm at Marrickville. Sydney City itself picked up 17mm.

Further showers are a chance on Sunday and at the start of the working week, before dry conditions return from Wednesday.
