Heaviest rain for year drenches Margaret River

Brett Dutschke
The Margaret River area, south of Perth, has just been drenched by its heaviest rain since last August and heaviest July rain in 11 years, gaining 46mm. Nearby, Forest Grove received 65mm yesterday afternoon and last night, their highest 24-hour July total in 24 years. This recent downpour takes the region's monthly total to about 170mm, close to the year-to-date average for the last decade. Some of this rain came down in a hurry in thunderstorms, especially yesterday afternoon, when a front was nearing the coast. A whopping 26mm fell in just 20 minutes in Cape Leeuwin and ended up with 65mm, which amazingly is their highest 24-hour total in 13 years. Today, there will only be the odd shower about, but another burst of heavy showers and storms will move through late on Wednesday. By Thursday morning, the Margaret River area will have gained another 15 to 30mm. That won't be the end of it either. Showers and storms will still be around each day until at least late next week, and these may amount to another 50mm or more. It's turning out to be a reasonably wet winter.
