Friday SE Qld storms a taste of wet weekend ahead
A band of mid-morning storms where the heaviest rain fell just west and north of Brisbane is just a taste of a very wet weekend to come for the Queensland capital and surrounds.
Around 10 am local time, a band of moisture with embedded rains passed through southeast Queensland, with only light rain in the Brisbane CBD and nearby suburbs but some seriously stormy activity nearby.
- Between 9 am and 11:30 am, Gatton (90 km west of the city) received 51.8 mm, with around 80% of that falling in a 90-minute burst after 10 am.
- Further north, the coast definitely got a dose of storms and heavy rain, with 103 mm between 9 and midday at Tin Can Bay (about 80 km by road north of Noosa). That was on the back of 21.8 mm between 7:30 am and 9 am.
So there's a very unstable, stormy weather pattern already, where tropical moisture is feeding into a very slow moving trough, which is likely to hang around over the weekend.
In Brisbane, it definitely won't be the greatest BBQ weather, with falls in the range of 40 to 80 mm quite likely on Saturday, with a range of 20 to 40 mm potentially on the cards for Sunday.
Even heavier falls are possible in Brisbane itself as well as across large parts of southeast Queensland, as the model below shows.

As we write this story just after midday local time, storms persist around the Sunshine Coast, areas just west of the Gold Coast Hinterland, as well as further north along the coast pretty much everywhere between Cairns and Mackay.
As you'd expect, numerous severe thunderstorm warnings are in place, so please check our warnings page to see if your area is affected.
