Fluffiest Aussie snow of 2021 coats the mountains in 'cold smoke'
It wasn't the heaviest snowfall of the year in the mountains of New South Wales and Victoria, but as frigid weather descended upon much of southeast Australia over the weekend, it was definitely the best quality snow.
As in, really cold, fluffy powder reminiscent of Canada, Colorado or Japan. Or "cold smoke" as skiers and snowboarders sometimes call it.

Approximately 10 to 20 centimetres of snow fell across the Aussie resorts over the weekend, roughy in line with what we predicted last week.
Snow in Australia often falls in very marginal temperatures, leaving a blanket more akin to wet cement than dry talcum powder. But this weekend, it was mostly the good, chalky stuff.

At Mt Hotham in Victoria, the Sunday morning table-o-meter was a good guide to how much snow had fallen.

And if you're wondering how cold things got after the cold air moved over Victoria on Friday, Mt Hotham had a MAXIMUM of -4.1°C to 9 am Saturday. Night time mins were only a degree or so lower over the weekend, as Hotham village sits atop the mountain, and the coldest night-time temps in all locations tend to be in valleys.
Meanwhile nearby Falls Creek ski resort also got itself a nice little dump of snow.

Across the border at Perisher, someone made the obligatory snowman beside a snowgum. Are there any more beautiful trees than snow gums?

And when the storm clouds cleared on Monday morning, things were loking pretty good across the mountains.

The winter 2021 snow coverage is still pretty moderate overall, especially in Victoria, and there's not too much hope of meaningful snowfalls to add to the natural depth this week. But cold, clear nights will be perfect for snowmaking, which is a big plus.
There are also early pointers to a more significant snow-bearing system next week. As ever, you should stay glued to Weatherzone's snow forecast page here.
