First Aussie minus 10 of 2021, while Hobart has coldest morning in two years
Anthony Sharwood
Tasmanians awoke to freezing temps on Wednesday morning, and if they were sensible, they went straight back to bed.
- Hobart had its coldest night for two years, with a minimum of just 0.2°C.
- Elsewhere in Tassie, numerous centres recorded their coldest night for 2021, including kunanyi/Mt Wellington above Hobart, which dipped down to -5.6°C.
- Liawenee was the coldest place in the state at -6.0°C overnight.
- We've written about Liawenee often here at WZ. Situated at 1057 metres on Tasmania's Central Plateau, it holds the record for Tassie's coldest night on record, a brisk -14.2°C.

Meanwhile, cold overnight temps also chilled the mainland.
- Perisher Valley in NSW recorded -10°C overnight, the first double-digit negative minimum of 2021 anywhere in Australia.
- Interestingly, the minimum came relatively early in the evening at 9:46 pm. Things "warmed up" a little after that as a very slight breeze kicked in, hovering around -6°C or -7°C for most of the night.
- Canberra, which yesterday recorded its coldest maximum in 12 years, also had a chilly one, with a low of -4.7°C, its third-coldest night to date of winter 2021.

Freezing or near-freezing temperatures can be expected to continue across much of southeastern Australia for the next few nights.
