Easter weather is looking pretty sweet

Anthony Sharwood

Throw your raincoat in the cupboard and break out the swimwear and outdoors gear. You might even hide a few eggs in the garden without worrying about them being in a puddle in the morning.

The happy Easter news for people who live in the strip of eastern Australia that has been relentlessly soggy in recent months is that the weather over the Easter break looks fine, mild and perfect for outdoors activities.

Sydney in particular looks set for several days of perfect weather. Tops of between 24°C and 27°C are forecast for the four days of the Easter break, with only the slightest chance of a light shower.

Brisbane should be a little warmer with tops between 26°C and 28°C and again, just a slight chance of a very light drop, but nothing that should put too much of a dampener on things.

Canberra also looks fine, with max temps a little cooler in the 21-23°C range from Friday to Monday, and only the slight chance of a shower on Monday with an approaching cold front.

That front looks likely to affect weather in Adelaide, Melbourne and Hobart later on Sunday into Monday, dropping temps a few degrees by Monday and bringing showers. But the first few days of the break look decent enough in those cities too, with some lovely autumn days peaking in the mid-twenties.

Perth should also be fine, warm and sunny, while the wet season appears to be easing off in Darwin (as you'd expect by mid-April), with only the chance of light showers.

So all in all, it's a pretty positive Easter forecast for the capital cities and most places in between.

But the big news is that the east coast from Sydney to Brisbane and slightly further afield should stay largely dry, with a high pressure ridge dominating, which makes a nice change from all those troughs and lows.

It would have been a brave east coast person who got online in recent weeks and booked a campsite or beachside getaway for Easter. But if you can still get away now, we recommend you pack the swimmers, togs, bathers, cozzies or budgie smugglers (or whatever you call them in your part of the country) and go for it!
