Cold, wet, and windy day in Tasmania

Ben Domensino

Snow will fall to low levels in Tasmania today as temperatures plummet behind a strong cold front.

The front caused powerful winds and showers as it passed over the state from west to east during Tuesday morning and afternoon. These conditions prompted a severe weather warning for damaging winds in parts of the state's south, east and north, including Hobart, Launceston and Devonport.

Some of the strongest wind gusts up to 1pm on Tuesday were 150km/h at Maatsuyker Island, 119km/h at Mount Wellington, 98km/h at Tunnack, and 83km/h at Hobart.

The combination of cold air and showers is also causing snow in the state's highlands and some lower-lying areas in the west. Snow could fall as low as around 500 metres elevation during Tuesday afternoon and evening, with a Bushwalkers Alert and Sheep Graziers Warning issued in response to the wintry weather.

Wind and rain will ease during Tuesday night, with drier weather returning on Wednesday. However, another frontal system will bring more wet weather on the weekend.
