06/03/2007: Flash flooding is occurring around Coffs Harbour as the town receives its heaviest rain in seven months, according to Weatherzone.

Coffs Harbour received 47mm to 9am today and then another 101mm in the two hours to 11am. The last time rain this heavy fell was back in August 2006.

“A slow-moving trough of low pressure is responsible for the deluge in Coffs Harbour this morning. A narrow band of very heavy rain has been moving slowly north up the coast with the trough,” Weatherzone meteorologist Matt Pearce said.

“This band of rain will keep tracking north up the coast through the rest of the day, so we are likely to see heavy falls extend into the Northern Rivers.”

The rain has not been restricted to Coffs Harbour, with many towns in the Bellinger Valley receiving between 50 and 60mm to 9am today, then another 20 to 30mm since then.

A Severe Weather Warning is in force for the Mid North Coast and Northern Rivers, warning of the potential for flash flooding.

“Rain along this part of the New South Wales coast is welcome indeed, as it is one of the few areas not to receive above average rainfall over the last two months,” Pearce said.
