Brisbane footy weather forecast: surprisingly cool, mostly dry

Bob Neil

Brisbane is set for a massive sporting Saturday, with the city hosting a twilight AFL preliminary final between the Brisbane Lions and Carlton Blues, then doubling up with an evening NRL preliminary final as the Brisbane Broncos tackle the New Zealand Warriors.

But will the weather be a key player in either match?

They say an umpire or referee has done a good job when no one noticed them, and it's a similar story with weather in most sports.

On that note, the good news is that no one should notice the Brisbane weather on Saturday evening, as both the AFL and the NRL preliminary finals should be played in lovely mild conditions with only a slight chance of a brief shower.

Here's the Brisbane weather breakdown for the next few days...

  • The extreme September heat that has blanketed eastern NSW for around five days now will finally work its way up to southeast Queensland on Thursday.
  • Brisbane will reach 35°C on Thursday afternoon, with even hotter temperatures further inland. Brisbane's average September maximum is 25.6°C so it'll definitely be a hot one for the time of year.
  • But winds will shift around to the south and southeast on Friday, capping temps in the low to mid-twenties for the ensuing few days.
  • Brisbane should reach 24°C on Friday, while game day on Saturday will reach 23°C, a touch cool for September in Brisbane but perfect footy weather.

As for those potential showers, they're really only expected to flick the bayside suburbs. But as any Brisbanite knows, the CBD isn't too far from the bay and with both Suncorp Stadium and The Gabba in that general part of town, you wouldn't entirely rule out a brief drop on Saturday evening.

At this stage, our Brisbane forecast suggests a 12% chance of rain at 6 pm and a 17% chance of rain at 9 pm on Saturday.

The AFL bounce is at 5:15 pm while the NRL kickoff is at 7:50 pm.
