Australia's alps have entered spring with an impressive amount of natural snow still on the ground.

This week's natural snow depth at Spencers Creek in NSW was 222.3cm. While this is a 6.5cm drop from last week, it's one of the best spring snow depths measured at the site in years.

Only three of the last 20 years have seen this much snow measured at Spencers Creek during spring. These were in 2019, 2017 and 2000.

While warm air and rain could cause a bit of snow melt in the NSW alps during Friday, colder air is likely to top up the natural snow base between Friday evening and Monday.

Daytime temperatures will warm up quickly from next Tuesday, although there's a good chance that we could see a new peak snow depth for the season measured at Spencers Creek next week.

This has been the third consecutive year to see a snow depth of more than two metres measured at Spencers Creek, a feat that has only happened three times in the last 65 years.
