As the east coast is drenched, Mildura cops a dust storm
It's safe to say there's a bit of weather around Australia today.
- The two systems getting most of the headlines are Tropical Cyclone Anika up north, which looks likely to redevelop near Broome in coming days.
- Then obviously there's the devastating flooding in southeast Queensland and northeast New South Wales, as rainfall records and river heights are shattered.
- You can read about the on-the ground situation in Lismore here, a statistical breakdown of the rainfall data here, and the causes behind the weather system that brought the flooding rains here.
Meanwhile there's also some pretty unstable weather further afield in a broad inland sweep of country that includes western Victoria, southwest NSW, and the southeast corner of South Australia.
The Bureau of Meteorology issued Severe Thunderstorm Warnings this afternoon for many of those areas. And as confirmed by the BoM, there were also dust storms in the Mildura area earlier this afternoon.

"The only place I know that gets a dust storm when the rest of Australia is flooding,” local Instagram user Bush_Barista said, with an eyeroll for emphasis.
While large parts of eastern Australia – including inland areas that often see minimal summer rain – have had wet summers, Mildura and most of western Victoria has been very hit and miss.
- After a wettish end to spring with 66.3 mm in the gauge in November, December was basically bone dry in Mildura with just 0.6 mm.
- January then came to the rescue with 86.2 mm but February was again desperately dry until 6 mm fell last night – the first rain of the month.
You know the old phrase: "barely enough rain to settle the dust?" Well last night's rain clearly wasn't, judging by today's dust storm.
Another 6mm fell after the dust storm today, and there is the strong possibility of further showers or storms tomorrow in Mildura and surrounds before a drying trend sets in over the first week of autumn.
