Ben Domensino
More than a month's worth of rain drenched parts of South Australia on the weekend, while some areas in Victoria just had their heaviest rain in six years. A band of rain and storms slowly spread over the to states on the weekend with the passage of a low pressure trough. One of the first places to see the rain was South Australia's Nullarbor, which collected 50mm during the 24 hours to 9am on Sunday. This is close to four times the monthly average for February and their heaviest rain in a year. Loxton and Nuriootpa had their heaviest rain since the exceptionally wet month of September, amassing 17mm and 31mm respectively within 24 hours. Adelaide's 29mm during Sunday and Monday morning was the city's heaviest rain in two months. Adelaide is now having its third wettest summer on record, with 164mm in the gauge so far his season. This puts it within striking distance of 1937 (168.5mm) and the record 1925 (172.8mm). Rain spread across Victoria on Sunday and continued into this morning, producing more than 50mm in some eastern suburbs of Melbourne and on the Mornington Peninsula. Hopetoun had its heaviest rain in six years, receiving 36mm by 9am today. Rhyll (51mm) and Cerberus (43mm) both saw their heaviest in four years. Melbourne's 32mm to 9am today was its heaviest rain in three years and more than half of the city's February monthly average. Rain will clear most areas tonight and shift north into New South Wales on Tuesday. Drier and warmer conditions will return to South Australia and Victoria in the middle of the week.
