Sydney on track for warmest March on record

Ben Domensino

Sydney is experiencing an exceptionally warm start to autumn and is currently on track to register its warmest March in 165 years of records.

Two periods of very hot weather and an absence of any significant cold spells have made the last few weeks to feel more like the middle of summer than the start of autumn in Sydney.

The city has exceeded 36ºC twice so far this month, a feat that has only happened during March on one other occasion since 1859.

As a result of the recent heat, Sydney’s running monthly average maximum temperature up to 9am AEDT on Wednesday, March 22 was 28.5ºC. This is a whopping 3.7ºC above the long-term average for March.

Based on current forecasts for the remainder of month, Sydney’s monthly maximum temperature should come in at around 27.7ºC, above the existing March record of 27.4ºC from 2018.
