Perth's June the coldest in 15 years

30/06/2010: Perth has just shivered through its coldest June in 15 years, according to weatherzone.com.au.

Minimum temperatures in Perth were the lowest they’ve been since 2006, averaging at 7.1 degrees, one-and-a-half below the norm. This was helped by a spate of frosty mornings during the last week of the month.

From Thursday 24th to Monday 28th, morning minimum temperatures dropped below three degrees, the longest string of temperatures this low in at least 17 years.

“A cold front pushed through the southern half of Western Australia during the 23rd,” explained Samuel Terry, meteorologist for weatherzone.com.au. “This cold front was immediately preceded by very dry winds and clear skies, all contributing to Perth’s run of cold mornings, including the second coldest morning in 130 years of records.”

By combining minimum and maximum temperatures, it's clear that residents of Perth just experienced the chilliest June since 1995.

“Minimums were the main contributor to the overall coldness of June, but maximum temperatures were also below average,” said Terry. “There were some days during the period where a blanket of cloud covered much of the west, keeping maximum temperatures down.”

It wasn’t only the mercury that was low in Perth in the last month. Rainfall totals in the region were generally less than half of the long-term average. The city itself only collected 51 millimetres, as compared to the June average of 135 millimetres.

“A broad high pressure ridge sat across the southern half of the country for the majority of June,” Terry explained. “A ridge like this forces most rain-bearing systems further south, and it has been no different this month.”

“For the rest of winter, rainfall is looking more positive, with median or above-median rainfall expected, which is good news given that winter is by far the wettest time of year for the region.”
