Not such a wet January for Perth, Brisbane, Hobart and even Sydney

Sam Brown

As Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra and Darwin are having a wetter than average January, Perth, Brisbane and Hobart have been much drier than average, while Sydney sits just below average.

Perth has only seen 0.2 mm so far this month and with no rain expected to finish the month off, will have had its driest month since February 2019 and driest January since 2014.

Sydney is currently sitting at 97.4 mm, only 4 mm below its long term average of 101.4 mm. Recent and consistent rain has helped totals climb to near average over the last few days. Even with the city near average, the total so far is the wettest January since 2016.

Brisbane is sitting on 86.6 mm for the month so far, well below the January average of 140.5 mm. However, January 2019 was a lot drier with only 27.6 mm falling for the month. Less than 5 mm is expected between now and the end of the month keeping the January average far below the long term average.

Hobart has had 28.8 mm fill the rain gauge so far this month. The long term January average is 45 mm for the city and with less than 1 mm forecast to end the month, this total is unlikely to be reached. As with Brisbane, January 2019 was a lot drier in Hobart with only 0.4 mm falling for the entire month of January.

With only one more day in the month, only Darwin, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne have the chance of a shower or two on Sunday to complete January rainfall totals.
