Melbourne escapes heavy rain, Sydney could be in for a 'Big Splash' final
Friday night is looking all right in the major eastern capitals, with Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane all looking fine for the rest of the day and evening - with the chance of a late afternoon or evening shower or storm in Canberra.
Melbourne received 1.6 mm in the CBD in a heavy downpour early on Friday afternoon, but the rain cleared the metropolitan area within an hour, with falls of generally less than 5 mm recorded across the city.
This morning's forecast had suggested the potential for heavier falls, but the rainband passed through Melbourne quicker than expected.
The rain band with embedded lightning strikes crossing eastern Australia just before 2 pm on Friday.
It was a different story in parts of regional Victoria, with more than 10 mm falling in towns like Wangaratta (11.2 mm) and Yarrawonga (15.4 mm) in the north of the state, while the Victorian Alps received heavier falls which are continuing throughout the afternoon.
On the weekend, all eyes will turn to Sydney in the evening when it hosts the Big Bash final between defending champs the Sydney Sixers and the Perth Scorchers at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
You'd have to say it'll be classic SCG cricket weather - as in wet. But there's a chance the forecast storms will arrive before or after the match, allowing play to go ahead uninterrupted.
Sydney looks set to be much drier on Sunday, with a perfect summer's day of 29 degrees and sunshine forecast.
Melbourne should also stay mostly dry, although it wll be unseasonally cool, with a maximum of 19 predicted.
