Heat just keeps spilling from northern VIC into Melbourne
Rob Sharpe
Summer keeps on providing extraordinary heat for Victoria, with this week no exception.
Today or tomorrow should mark Mildura's 16th day over 40 degrees since the start of summer, equaling the record set in 1981. Later in the week there should be another three days over 40, with the record set to get smashed by the end of the year.
This remarkable heat hasn't been limited to northern Victoria, as almost all Australians will know. In the past 24 days, more than half of Melbourne's days have exceeded 30 degrees, including five over 40 degrees. Only in three years in the 158 years of records have seen six or seven days reach or exceed 40 degrees in summer. On Saturday, Melbourne should make this the fourth summer to do this.
Melbourne will reach the mid 30's today and tomorrow before hitting 40 on Saturday with increased fire danger across the state. Saturday night will be very warm, possibly only dropping as low as 30 degrees in the city. On Sunday the cool change should arrive in the late morning in Melbourne, dropping temperatures suddenly. However those living in the north and east of the state will still see the heat into the afternoon with 40 degree temperatures.
There should be a few days near to average across Victoria early next week before heat rebuilds towards the middle of the week with 40 degree temperatures again likely across the north.
